What are some chemo side effects?

Important side effects:
-Febride neutropenia: makes your immune system low. You have a serious infection (blood poisoning or septicaemia) you would have chills, shakes, sweats, lethargy and a fever- a temperature of 38 degrees celsius or higher. In such a situation, please go to the nearest emergency department without delay.
-Nausea and vomiting: use metoclopromide as instructed. if this fails there are other medications such as ondansetron (zofran), or if not controlled go to the emergency department.
-Lethargy: rest and listen to your body. Drink lots of water (1-2 L of water a day)
-Mouth ulcers (painful sores in the mouth) : gargle with non-alcoholic mouth wash every 4 hours. Start with 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water.
-Constipation is common. it can be prevented by taking adequate water, lots or fruits and vegetables. Some people need laxatives such as coloxyl with senna or movical etc. Take as instructed on the label.
-Diarrhoea occasionally happens. Don't stop drinking in excess of 2 litres of water (or similar fluids), and avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol as they can dehydrate you. Take anti diarrhoea med as directed e.g. gastrostop 2 tablets four times a day.

If not better after 24 hours call the day oncology or go to the emergency department. Or call 0408 398 114 (for Frankston Hospital patients- after hours)
